The recent statistics published by the Government of India and the Indian Dental Association reveals that the most common dental affliction in children is Dental Caries. It is a studied fact that 70% of the oral and dental diseases can be prevented by dental health education and preventive care. In the present scenario Preventive Dentistry can play a significant and decisive role in promoting good dental hygiene. Preventive Dental Health Programme is a community based programme involving all the sections of people.
Concepts
The systematic and scientific awareness programme will lay the foundation of a healthy mouth in young children for life time ahead. A healthy mouth if maintained from infancy will develop healthy milieu for the permanent dentition to develop. This project introduces and implements the principles and concepts of prevention of dental diseases right from infancy through childhood and adolescence.
“Health through Knowledge”:
The programme is to be promoted by the involvement of the community at every stage of
implementation by mass education programmes. Dentists and other health professionals
involved in the project would impart knowledge on the preventive aspects of dental and
oral hygiene at the grass root level. The information is then disseminated to the wider
population by community participation. Kerala, the most literate state in the country is
well known for highly successful community based programmes in health and education through
mass movements. The success of this project can also thus be assured.
