President Speaks

With immense pleasure welcome you to Dental Care Society (DCS)

The Dental Care Society(DCS), Taliparamba , is constituted as a public charitable Society by dentists and eminent personalities committed to promoting community dentistry encompassing both preventive dentistry as well as social dentistry.

Tooth ache is as old as mankind. Oldest mention of tooth ache is from a ‘Greek text- written 3500 years back on papyrus. It said it is a cumulative effect of all curses. Tooth ache is described as pain of pains.

Dentistry is a fast growing discipline of medicine and earns more and more relevance as year pass by Considering its role in general health and cosmetics. Dental diseases like life style diseases are on the rise in india. Life style changes are prices of the modernity. All of us in the pursuit of better life have made changes in the way we eat, drink, work and live. Energy dense Fast food with minimal fiber content, less physical activity and sedentary life, all contributed well to the cause. Tooth ache is the most common health problem in children and adult in India. 90% of the population have big or small dental, periodontal (Gum), bad breath problem – most of the common body cancer is Oral cancer.

The present competitive era and immense opportunity for public appearance and visibility demand for better facial appearance and personal presentation from individuals and that directly gave more relevance and acceptance to cosmetic dentistry. Now there is a clear shift in the mind set of young generation where celebrities are their role models.

Combating dental diseases is rather easy comparing other life style diseases. Mere awareness, night brushing habits and early treatment can bring down the incidence to 60%. Community initiative and intervention is the duty of the government, NGO’s and public. The public health institution should expand their wings and reach uncovered regions and segments of the society. But unfortunately we have no clear oral health policy till date though dental and oral health is considered as forerunner of good general health. Dental health till today has not figured in the primary health considerations of the government but recent recommendations for universal health coverage and enhancing expenditure on health to 2.5% from 1.5% of GDP as of now, sound promising for the future. An NGO like the DCS has space when we realized that government alone can’t do public dental health activitis when the country is so badly in need of it.

At DCS we have designed few programmes to spread awareness among all sections of people especially children. “Caries free Generation” is an ongoing project aimed at children with zero cavity and rid of any bad oral habits. The three ongoing projects are free dental clinics, free cleft lip & palate surgery, Oral cancer screening programme. We promote Holistic dentistry , Family Dentistry and Natural care for teeth. Basically it is an alternative dentistry or a new dental culture that stems from our tradition. My humble request to all well wishers is to extend your patronage and co-operation for the fulfillment of our objectives. You are the social auditor of our activities and feel free to advise us, guide us and correct us.

I conclude by reminding the words of our great cricketer, fighter and now the ambassador of good health Yuvaraj Sing. “Real happiness is in good health, not in money or power. So take care of your health when you are healthy”.

Dr.M.Raveendranath

President, Dental Care Society.

Dental care society

  • To achieve the objective of a “Carries Free Generation” we need to create a team of dental health workers, one per 1000 children. The preferred choice is a group of ladies with science background who are good communicators to spread the message.
  • The dental health worker should be trained to conduct surveys and prepare a database , to identify defective facial and dental development, and to provide guidance for early preventive programs and treatment.
  • The survey aims to build a database with dental status of children of age 0 to 10, classified into three age groups and to identify prevalence of dental carries among them. Continuous update of this database by the dental health workers will help to monitor and guide their activities.
  • The dental health workers will guide the target group to cultivate good habits of dental hygiene among children, early corrective and preventive treatment to keep up good facial appearance.
